This short story, while chronologically a prequel to the novel IronStar, is intended to be read after reading IronStar. Upfall is set some 200 years earlier in the IronStar universe, and chronicles the origin of the faster-than-light technology used in IronStar. An observant IronStar reader will have noticed in Appendix 6, a brief allusion to that discovery, and this is the story of that event. This story explores, among other things, the idea of the “space elevator”, that magical, just-slightly-out-of-current-reach technology which may someday lift humanity off our homeworld and into near space, and do so with far greater efficiency than chemical rockets. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, just Google “space elevator”, and imagine an elevator reaching from Earth’s surface up past geosynchronous orbit, out to some eighty thousand kilometers, powered by our planet’s rotation. And then ask yourself, what could possibly go wrong? In the course of exploring that question, this short story introduces a number of characters which IronStar readers may recognize as ancestors of the characters they’ve met in IronStar. Yes, it may seem an unlikely coincidence that so many of them should find themselves thrown together in the events of Upfall, but I like those people, and enjoyed giving life to their great-great grandparents. And finally, gentle reader, Upfall is also an unapologetic romance. The solid science and gritty reality is there, as fans of “hard” sci-fi have every right to expect, but even in that sometimes harsh and unforgiving light, very occasionally, something unreasonably, gloriously wonderful must happen.
