Gregorius, a wealthy young Roman educated in Alexandria under the tutelage of Heron, the well known engineer/scientist is brought the news of the proscription and total elimination of his family in Rome by Tiberius. This news if brought by Lucius, a military tribune who was adopted into Gregorius’s family when his parents died.Although, shattered by this news, Gregorius determines to evade the emperor’s agents by sailing to Britannia, which lies outside the Roman world. Another friend, Drusus, son of a wealthy ship owner joins them and after selling his possessions in Alexandria and pooling them with the contributions of his friends and Heron they sail for Britannia.The king of south eastern Britannia, Cunoval, welcomes them but informs them that Celts do not buy and sell land, it has to be inherited, conquered or brought into a family by marriage, they do not consider that land can be owned.After a demonstration by Lucius of some of their military equipment and long talks with Gregorius, Cunoval decides to send them off to the north with five hundred of his conscripted peasants to build a small fortified settlement on the Trent, where he expects them to develop a small disciplined force sworn to him by oath and which would provide a core for his allies to form around in the event of his untimely death. When the settlement is self supporting and effective he plans to inform his ambitious older sons of this precaution.The settlement is built and develops rapidly into an effective town with a very small, disciplined army and increasing wealth as a result of Gregorius’s use of water power and technical expertise. Windubro becomes a small but growing influence and market in the Midlands of Britannia.
