Dopo aver passato una serata in compagnia di amici, un giovane avvocato londinese sale su una carrozza della metropolitana diretto al suo appartamento. La carrozza è vuota, ma dopo qualche fermata due uomini prendono posto accanto a lui. Uno è anziano, corpulento, ben vestito, con un viso simpatico e un’aria visibilmente compiaciuta. L’altro è più giovane, indossa abiti malridotti e ha un aspetto sofferente, ma uno sguardo vivo che denota prontezza d’ingegno e mani affusolate che si muovono con eleganza. I due chiacchierano, e l’avvocato non può fare a meno di ascoltare. L’uomo anziano parla di una donna; a un certo punto si piega verso l’altro, abbassa la voce fino a un sussurro e nulla più si sente della conversazione. Il treno si ferma a un’altra stazione e riparte senza che nessuno sia salito sulla carrozza. D’improvviso l’uomo anziano si blocca a metà di una frase, s’irrigidisce, si guarda intorno con aria sconcertata, porta una mano alla gola e cade a terra. Il treno, nel frattempo, è arrivato alla stazione di Charing Cross. «Vado a cercare un medico! Torno subito!», esclama l’amico in preda all’agitazione e si allontana di corsa. Ma non tornerà più, e comunque il suo compagno è già morto. Avvelenato. Scritto nel 1923, questo “delitto in treno” è una delle più riuscite opere dell’autore.
