Professor D.C.R.A. Gunatilaka wrote in 1984 – The Journal of Commonwealth Literature Vol. XIX No. 2The Smell of Araliya was Kamala Wijeratne’s first volume of poems. Since then she has published four more volumes. But the first is the best. It now goes into a second edition.Kamala Wijeratne is preoccupied with the Kandyan countryside into which she was born and, though she now lives in the town, she is imaginatively in touch with it and one feels that, unlike many of our better-known writers, she has roots in the soil and that her patriotism is genuine, deeply felt. But it is a modern mind that contemplates rural experience, aware that she no longer has a place in the village, torn between her attachment and alienation. Conscious of Nature in precise detail both in its lovely and unglamorous aspects yet never a simple Nature poet. Nature evokes, in her, feelings for it as well as leading on to interesting and more important reflections on human life whether on the shortcomings of the present age or on rebirth. She is also sensitive to recent problems and writes memorably on communal conflict, the vanity and the price of the quest for petro dollars on the part of Sri Lankans which has led to a mass exods to the Middle East. She is capable of transporting herself imaginatively in to worlds out side th immediate present and recreating them from her own angle, whether that of Anna Karenina or Patachara of the well- Known Buddhist story. Her range is remarkable, her promise undoubted, and her emotional engagement in her poetry a refreshing contrast to the ultimately cerebral impression of some of our poets.
