He should have accompanied you.” with that Anthony helped me to my feet, and tenderly held his arm around my back; “Let me help you indoors Samantha; I shall fetch you a brandy for the shock, and will sort out that reprobate at first light.”We went into the drawing room, which was candle-lit and had a roaring log fire burning in the grate; I could immediately feel myself starting to calm down, and sipped gratefully at my brandy. Anthony sat by my feet on the floor, and it felt easier to talk to him when we were not actually making eye contact. We talked about everyday things for a while, and then the conversation turned to the death of his wife; Anthony explaining to me that he had thought he would die too, at least for the first few months. “It has only been recently that I have been able to think of the future again,” he said with a smile in his voice, “And that has been thanks to you. You have made me realize that there are things worth living for; my children and family, my career; but most of all, you.”I was too shocked to reply; although I had suspected that Anthony may be starting to have feelings for me, I had not realized that they went as deep. He turned on his knees to face me, and leaning toward me, looked me in the eyes, and whispered “May I kiss you?” The shadows from the fire flickered across his face and it was difficult to see his eyes clearly, but I had no hesitation in my heart; I knew that this was what I wanted too, and did not object when he picked me up from the couch and lay me down in front of the fire.
